knowledge of its participants.
[2] Q. How many voters are there?
The number of voters varies from year to year.
[3] Q. Does the Jockey Club of Canada publicize the voters' selections?

organization respects an individual's right to vote and believes
that it is an important aspect in maintaining the integrity of
the Sovereign Awards process.
[4] Q. How is the winner in each category determined?
A point system is used to determine the winner in each category. Therefore, it
is important that each voter make three choices in each of the seventeen
divisional categories.
- 4 points are awarded to the first selection
- 2 points are awarded to the second selection
- 1 point is awarded to the third selection
[5] Q. Are the point totals released to the public?
Yes, point totals are released to the public but not until the last award of
the evening has been presented. The last award of the evening is always Horse
of the Year.
[6] Q. Who tabulates the ballots?
Votes are tabulated through the voting website once all ballots have been cast and the voting period has closed.
[7] Q. I do not see a particular horse on the list. Can I vote for that horse?
Voters are free to vote for any horse whether or not past performances have been included provided the horse has
made the minimum number of starts required in Canada prior to midnight
on December 31st, 2023.
[8] Q. I do not see a particular owner, breeder, trainer, jockey or
apprentice jockey on the list. Can I vote for that individual or entity?
Voters may vote for any individual or entity whether or not a statistical
profile has been included provided the individual or entity has made 10 starts
in Canada. According to the
Sovereign Awards Rules & Procedures of Eligibility, Selection and
Distribution, the Jockey Club of Canada will provide statistical
profiles for the owners, breeders, trainers, jockeys and apprentice jockeys who
are in the top ten overall based on total numbers of wins and total earnings to
December 31st, 2023.
[9] Q. How does one vote online for an equine or human contender not
included in the past performances or statistics that have been provided?
A blank space has been provided in each category in the online system. Should
you wish to cast a vote for a equine or human contender not included simply
type in their name and indicate whether you would like to select them as your
first, second, or third choice.
[10] Q. How are the horses chosen as contenders in the past performances?
There are approximately 250 stakes races in Canada in any given year. Winners
of all stakes races in Canada are tracked throughout the year, from which past
performance information is provided on the most logical eligible contenders in
each divisional category based on their performance in the award year.
